How does Google decide which repair shops show up first?
Google looks at three things: how well your profile matches the search, how close your shop is, and how well known it is. Google’s Business Profile Help states that more reviews and positive ratings can help a business’s local ranking. A complete profile helps too, so list your services, such as brakes, tires, oil changes or detailing.
According to search volume data for 2026, “mechanic near me” gets about 308,000 US searches a month and “oil change near me” about 905,000. IBISWorld counts 307,058 auto mechanic businesses in the United States as of 2026. You cannot move your shop closer to the person searching. You can keep your profile complete and keep adding reviews.
Do Google reviews help a repair shop get more customers?
Yes. In a 2021 survey of 1,900 vehicle owners, 90% said online reviews play a role in choosing an auto repair shop. Most owners cannot check a repair themselves, so they read what other customers say.
A second survey points the same way. In a 2023 survey of 1,117 US consumers, 84% said reviews were important or very important when choosing automotive services. That tied for the highest of any industry in the survey. These figures cover repair shops and mechanics, not detailing. See how Flamingo Flow works for the steps we use to collect reviews from your customers.
What star rating does an auto repair shop need?
At least four stars. In a 2021 survey of 1,900 vehicle owners, 72% would not consider a repair shop with less than four stars.
Your rating is the average of all your reviews. When a shop has only a few reviews, one low rating pulls the average down a lot. When it has many, one low rating barely moves it. Flamingo Flow asks your customers for a review after each visit, so more of your happy customers leave one. That keeps the shop’s rating steady. You can also see where your shop ranks on Google for the searches that matter.
How many Google reviews does a repair shop need?
There is no set number. Google does not publish a minimum for showing up in local results. A good target is to beat the three shops that show on the map for your main searches.
Search “mechanic near me” in your area and look at those three shops. Note how many reviews each has, its rating and the date of its newest review. Then aim to pass them. Our review calculator estimates how many reviews your past and new customers could bring in. We can ask customers from up to the last two years, so your shop does not start from zero.
How recent do a repair shop’s reviews need to be?
Try to have several from the last three months. A 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers found that 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months. That survey covers all local businesses, not only auto shops.
Old reviews describe the shop as it used to be. Staff, equipment and prices change over time. Google does not list review dates as a ranking factor, so this is about the person reading your profile. To keep reviews fresh, ask every customer after each visit. We also ask customers from up to the last two years. Requests go out in small batches, so reviews arrive steadily and not all in one week.
When should a repair shop ask for a review?
Ask soon after pickup, once the customer has paid and driven the vehicle. For a repair, that is about a day later. For a detail, the same day works, because the result is easy to see. A request sent a week or more later reaches a customer who remembers less about the visit.
Asking works. Among people who were asked to leave a review, 83% went on to leave one, according to a 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers. A text is the easiest way, because it does not depend on anyone at the counter. Flamingo Flow sends it for your shop. You choose how many gentle reminders go out after it, or none at all.
How do I get more Google reviews for my auto repair shop?
Ask every customer by text soon after pickup. The number of reviews a shop gets depends mostly on how many customers are asked. A request left to whoever is at the counter reaches only some of them. Customers from the last two years who were never asked can be asked too.
A text works well because the customer can write the review on their phone right away. Flamingo Flow sends each customer a personal text with a photo of you holding a sign with their name on it. Gentle reminders reach the people who did not answer the first time. Requests leave in small batches, and first reviews typically arrive within 24 hours.
Is it okay for a mechanic to ask customers for reviews?
Yes. Google allows a shop to ask its customers for reviews. Google’s Maps User Contributed Content Policy does not allow paying for them with money, discounts or free goods and services. Fake reviews and asking only happy customers are against that policy too.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s 2024 final rule also bans businesses from creating or selling fake reviews. It lets the agency seek civil penalties against knowing violators. Google can take down reviews that were gathered against its rules. Flamingo Flow offers nothing in return for a review. Our compliance standards list the rules we follow.
Can I get a fake review of my auto shop removed?
Maybe. Only Google can remove a review, so report it from your Business Profile. Google’s policy says a review must reflect a real experience with the business. A review from someone who was never a customer can be reported as fake.
If the first report gets no answer, Google has a reviews management tool. There you can check the status of a report and appeal. While you wait, post a short reply that says you have no record of the visit. Do not name or accuse a competitor in that reply. Removal is not guaranteed. A shop with many recent reviews is hurt far less by one false one-star review.
How do I reply to a bad review of my auto shop?
Reply, and keep it short and polite. In a 2021 survey of 1,900 vehicle owners, 70% said it is essential to see repair shops respond to negative online reviews. Say you are sorry they are unhappy and give a phone number or email. Do not post details about the vehicle or the invoice.
With Flamingo Flow, every review gets a reply in your shop’s voice. Our system also helps more of your shop’s happy customers leave reviews. More positive reviews mean one bad review counts for much less in your overall rating. Vehicle owners who compare shops later will read your reply too.
Are Google reviews or ads better for a repair shop?
They do different jobs. An ad keeps your shop above the map results until the budget runs out. Reviews help in the free map listing. According to Google’s Business Profile Help, more reviews and positive ratings can help a shop rank there. Reviews also stay on your profile when an ad stops.
A vehicle owner who clicks an ad can still read your rating before calling. In a 2021 survey of 1,900 vehicle owners, 56% were willing to travel farther to visit a shop with a higher overall rating. Every one of the Flamingo Flow plans includes every feature. Plans differ only by how many customers your shop asks each month.
Should my auto shop ask for reviews itself or use a service?
It comes down to who does the work each week. If you ask in-house, someone at the counter has to remember at pickup. Review software sends the texts, but someone at the shop still sets it up and writes the replies.
Flamingo Flow is a service we run for you, not software you operate. We send the requests and reminders, and we reply to every review in your shop’s voice. Your shop has a dedicated account manager. So far we have sent 250K+ review requests for 600+ local businesses, with 4x more reviews than the industry standard. We do the same for plumbers and cleaning companies.
How long does setup take for a repair shop?
One 15-minute call. We set up your account and connect your customer list or the shop software you already use. All we need from you is a photo of you holding up a blank board or paper.
After the call it is all automated. Your team does nothing. Requests go to new customers and to customers from up to the last two years. First reviews typically arrive within 24 hours of setup. It works the same way for repair shops, tire shops, detailers and mobile mechanics. There is no contract, and your first 7 days are free. To book your shop’s setup call, contact us.
What is auto repair reputation management?
Auto repair reputation management means looking after what a vehicle owner sees about your shop before calling. That is your Google rating, your review count, the dates of your latest reviews and your replies. Google shows these next to your shop’s name in local search results and on Google Maps.
Flamingo Flow takes care of three things. We bring in a steady flow of new reviews from real customers after each visit. We reply to every review in your shop’s voice. We track where your shop ranks for its main searches. We do not handle public relations, social media accounts or removing content from search results. Our guide to reputation management for local shops and services explains the rest.
Do you support repair shops with more than one location?
Yes. A group with several shops is supported, and each shop is run separately. On Google, each location has its own Business Profile, its own rating and its own place in local results.
Reviews on one profile do not move to another, so a second shop builds its own review count. Google measures distance from each shop’s own address. You can see where each shop ranks for the searches that matter. Adding staff members costs nothing extra. A mobile mechanic with no storefront can list the areas served on Google instead of a street address.
